Norma and Jessie
Twice a week "Norma" eagerly waits for "Jessie" to arrive to take her to the grocery store. Jessie is a volunteer who was recruited by her church through Volunteers In Service (VIS) over three years ago and she has been taking Norma to the store ever since. Norma has back problems that cause her to sometimes have to use a cane to get around. Norma doesn't have a car and had to rely on public transportation so getting places became very difficult for her so it is a huge relief to her to have Jessie help. Not only does Jessie take her to the store, but she carries the groceries into the house for Norma when they get home. When asked about her relationship with Norma, Jessie said, "She's wonderful! I will continue taking her to the store forever!" Norma concurs and said, "She's like a daughter to me. I just love her!" Jessie knows that even though it’s not very comfortable talking with Norma about God, she is showing Jesus’ love just by being with her and serving her. It is Jessie’s prayer that at some point she is able to share more about Jesus with her.
There are a lot of people like Norma who are waiting for a volunteer; someone who will be a friend, lend a helping hand, or just provide a listening ear. If you have a few hours each month that you could give to someone in need please contact Debbie Jones, Connections Coordinator at
